My EGR valve is clogged and I found someone to fix it and he says if the gasket cracks or breaks he can repair it with silicon, will that work as a longtem fix?Can you fix a gasket with silicone?
as long as it is the high temp red and not blue and use sparingly with the old gasket. Can you fix a gasket with silicone?
EGR valve gaskets usually are two layers of porforated thin sheet metal with a sandwitch of high temperature fabric between the layers. High temperature red silicone most likely would not stand the temperature of exhaust gases every time you start the car. Why not pick up a fresh gasket at a dealer?
I just happen to have a tube of high temperature silicone right here and it says: Not to be used on head gaskets or where gasoline is present.
Maybe high heat silicone will work. I remember a product called Permatex that might also work. You have to have a good seal between the EGR valve and the intake manifold so that you don't have a vacuum leak.
if you use high temperature silicone then yes, standard silicone will burn. EGR valve will need to be removed to do this but a new EGR valve will come with a new gasket any way!
