I told a hairstylist that I use friz ease on my hair and she told me that it has silicone in it so it works but if you dont use it the frizz will come back worse. And over time it ruins your hairIs the silicone in frizz ease bad for your hair over time?
Silicone is neither bad or good for your hair. It coats the hair, kind of like a plastic shrink wrap, keeping moisture out and hair smoother and silkier. But, silicone can build up, making the hair look and feel dry and plasticy over time.
If you like silicone serum, use it. But remember to clarify your hair about every week or two, to keep the silicone from building up.
After clarifying, your hair will not be any better or any worse than before you ever used the serum, it will just revert to the condition it was in before you used the serum. Silicone doesn't change the hair. It doesn't penetrate and cause the hair to be a different creature. Is the silicone in frizz ease bad for your hair over time?
no. hair is dead by nature. it's alive at the verymost underlayer of your scalp, but otherwise dead. that's why I crack up when people say that ';oh, your hair looks so healthy'; what they mean is shiny and not fragile/breaking.
Some women even get permanants but except for permanently straightening or permanant curls they get silicone perms to keep it shiny longer.
what is bad for your hair is trying to alter the shape of the actual hair shaft, and thus changing the overall shape through the use of high heat and wind. (hot hot curling irons or straighteners)
I don't think that these change the actual shape of the hairshaft but it takes the hair out of it's actual pattern.
What the silicone does is build up on your hair. It creates a coating. Oneday when you use a good cleansing shampoo, you will see that the frizz will come back, but worse.
This also happens with some wax based products...especially shampoos and conditioners. They will make your hair silky and soft, but it's really just that wax coating.
Its not necessarily bad for your hair...
It does build up on your hair, which really isnt a problem if you dont get anything done to your hair. As it builds up it can weigh your hair down and maybe even cause it to feel greasy. But it can cause problems when you try to color your hair, because the color may not be able to penetrate your hair as well, and the color wont turn out right. The thing its going to affect the most is if you get your hair permed or chemically straightened. Its not going to hold nearly as long, or it may not work at all.
Using a clarifying shampoo, like Redken Hair Cleansing Cream, once a week or two weeks will help get rid of some of the build up.
Absolutely not! Silicone is great for your hair! Your stylist only said that because she wants you to buy product from her. Shame on her!
