What usually holds ceramic floor tiles down? Cement? Mortar? What? I saw someone using silicone...Wrong to do?

I'm pretty sure the guy using silicone was wrong, especially since he was putting it under a wood stove. Wouldn't this melt or something? Is the real stuff cement or mortar? What's it called and what is it like? Is it the same thing as cement or something? What usually holds ceramic floor tiles down? Cement? Mortar? What? I saw someone using silicone...Wrong to do?

Home Depot and Lowes carry the DIY Thinsets in white and gray. Make sure if you purchase thinset, it is a fortified thinset and just requires water. Some thinsets are quick setting and some require a polymer additive. You should get aproximatly 90 square feet coverage from a 25 pound bag. You can get premixed thinset ready to use for small repairs. Look in the flooring department of your local Home Depot or Lowes.
It's called ';thin set';. Is basically a mixture of portland cement, sand, color, and a plastic polymer. You will find it in the flooring dept of any hardware store.
